Headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois, Walgreen Company (WAG) is the largest national retail pharmacy chain in terms of revenue and profitability. The company operated 6,443 drug stores in 49 states in the U.S. and Puerto Rico as of August 31, 2008. Regionally, Florida, Illinois, and Texas have the greatest concentration of Walgreens stores. The drugstores, apart from selling prescription drugs, also sell over-the-counter (OTC) medications, general merchandise, cosmetics, toiletries, household items, and food and beverages. Prescription drugs accounted for 56% of sales in fiscal 2008. Walgreens also offers analog and digital photofinishing with in-store photo labs. The company has been in the forefront with innovative practices, such as computerized pharmacies point-of-sale scanning and Intercom Plus, Walgreen's advanced pharmacy computer and workflow system allows pharmacists to spend more time counseling patients by assigning administrative tasks to pharmacy technicians. The company has grown internally through geographical expansion and through greater penetration in current markets by means of greenfield development of new store sites.
