Formed in 1983, United States Cellular Corporation (USM) is the sixth largest wireless telecom operator in the U.S. with 6.2 million customers in 26 states. Based in Chicago, U.S. Cellular provides wireless service coverage in select midwest markets, including Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Tulsa, and Knoxville. U.S. Cellular caters to both retail consumers and business customers, offering a wide range of products and services, including local, regional, and national calling plans enhanced wireless services mobile messaging prepaid services office products data services international long-distance calling directory assistance roadside assistance and insurance for wireless phones. The company currently has a network that consists of nearly 6,600 cell sites which is expanding on a recurring basis to provide reliable, high-quality network services to existing and prospective customers. U.S. Cellular is primarily focused on the post-paid market segment with respectable customer retention rates. The company is the largest subsidiary of Telephone and Data Systems (TDS), a diversified telecom service provider. In 2002, U.S. Cellular purchased the metropolitan Chicago wireless assets from PCS PrimeCo for cash consideration of $610 million. The company's current network reaches approximately 15% of the country's geographic area and 12% of the U.S. population.
