Union Pacific Corporation (UNP) provides rail transportation services across 23 states in the U.S. through its principal operating company, Union Pacific Railroad Company. With a railroad network of 33,000 route miles, UNP links Pacific and Gulf Coast ports with the Midwest and eastern U.S. gateways as well as provides several north/south corridors to key Mexican gateways. The company also maintains coordinated schedules with other rail carriers for freight transportation to and from the Atlantic Coast, the Pacific Coast, the Southeast, Southwest, Canada, and Mexico. Union Pacific derives its revenue from the haulage of coal, industrial products, intermodal (transportation via both trains and trucks), agricultural products, chemicals, and automotive products (parts and finished vehicles). Revenue mix by commodity type for the year ended December 31, 2007, is shown in the chart to the left. In November 2003, the company divested its 100% stake in Overnite Inc. through an initial public offering (IPO), making UNP a pure railroad company.
