Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM)

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Ltd. (TSM) is the world's largest dedicated semiconductor foundry. The company applies its significant expertise in the highly complex, capital-intensive semiconductor production process toward providing manufacturing services for its customers. The majority of TSM's customers have traditionally been fabless semiconductor companies, meaning they focus their resources on designing proprietary semiconductor devices while outsourcing the actual production of their circuit designs to foundries such as TSM.

The company is primarily engaged in wafer fabrication for foundry customers. It also offers design, mask making, wafer probing and testing services, and, on a subcontracted basis, assembly services. Because of its ability to provide a full array of services in addition to wafer fabrication, Taiwan Semiconductor is able to accommodate customers with a variety of input and output needs. Almost all of its customers choose to have the company make the masks to be used during the fabrication process, as this decreases the risk of damage to the masks that may result from transporting them. A growing number of customers also have begun to use the company's design services. The flexibility in input stages allows Taiwan Semiconductor to cater to a variety of customers with different in-house capabilities and, thus, to service a wider class of customers, as opposed to a foundry that cannot offer design or mask-making services.
