Lan Airlines S.A. (LFL), formerly LAN Chile S.A., is the main provider of domestic and international passenger and cargo air services in Chile and one of the leading airlines in Latin America. The Chilean government founded LAN Chile in 1929. The company was government-owned until its incorporation in 1983. In 2005, the company changed its name from LAN Chile to Lan Airlines, widely accepted international brand. Today, Lan Airlines' operations are carried out by a number of different subsidiaries using a variety of brand names, forming the Lan Alliance. The Lan Alliance includes: LanChile, LanExpress, LanPeru, LanEcuador, LanArgentina and LanDominicana. Through this alliance and its code-sharing arrangement, Lan Airlines serves 15 destinations in Chile, seven destinations in Peru, 2 destinations in Ecuador, 3 destinations in Argentina, 18 destinations in other Latin American countries, 25 destinations in North America, 10 destinations in Europe, and four destinations in the South Pacific. The company has a fleet of wide-bodied aircraft, narrow-bodied passenger aircraft, and freighter aircraft. The company also provides cargo service to all passenger destinations and to additional freighter destinations. Furthermore, LFL offers handling services and courier services through some of its subsidiaries.
