Kinder Morgan Energy Ptnr (KMP)

Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P. (KMP) is the largest independent owner and operator of petroleum product pipelines in the U.S., transporting more than two million barrels per day of gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel, and natural gas liquids. The partnership also has capacity to transport 7 billion cubic feet/day (Bcf/d) of natural gas. It owns or operates more than 25,000 miles of pipeline and approximately 165 terminals. The terminals store petroleum products and chemicals, besides handling bulk materials like coal and petroleum coke. The partnership is also the largest carbon dioxide marketer and transporter in the country. The partnership's newest business segment is the Trans Mountain Pipeline, an approximately 715-mile pipeline system that transports crude oil and petroleum products from Alberta to marketing terminals and refineries in British Columbia and the Washington State. Trans Mountain has a pipeline capacity of approximately 260,000 barrels per day.

The partnership divides its operations in five business segments: Product Pipelines (approximately 26% of the partnership's 2007 earnings before DD&A and amortizations), Natural Gas Pipelines (27%), Carbon Dioxide Pipelines (24%), Terminals (20%), and Trans Mountain (3%). Knight Inc. (formerly Kinder Morgan, Inc.), one of the largest mid-stream energy companies in the U.S., owns the partnership's general partner interest and also maintains a roughly 10% limited partnership interest.
