Company Overview:Note: this section is not editable.
Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Juniper Networks, Inc. (JNPR) was founded in 1996. The company shipped its first core Internet router in 1998 and went public in 1999. The company manufactures, designs, and sells Internet Protocol (IP)-based core and edge data networking routers. Through a series of acquisitions, beginning with the 2004 purchase of NetScreen Technologies, JNPR became a provider of network security products and began selling to enterprise customers in addition to its telecom service provider base. Juniper further bolstered its security offering with the acquisitions of Funk Software, Acorn Packet Solutions, Peribit Networks, Redline Networks, and Kagoor Networks in 2005. Juniper has primarily been known for its routers, and currently offers six major router platforms: The E-Series broadband service routing platform offers carrier class routing with comprehensive subscriber management and IP service support, and dynamic Quality of Service (QoS) implementation, optimized for multiplay service delivery to business and residential customers. The E-Series is typically purchased by telecom service providers. Juniper offers a number E-Series models, including the high-capacity E320 BSR and E120 BSR platforms, mid-range ERX-1440 and ERX-1410 platforms, and the compact ERX-710, ERX-705, and ERX-310. M-Series multiservice edge routers are also designed for telecom service providers. M-Series offers IP/MPLS capabilities, allowing service providers to offer new services, thereby maximizing revenues. The T-Series core router is Juniper's high-end offering, which competes' against Cisco's CRS-1 router, designed for next generation telecom networks. The family includes the T320, T640, TX Matrix, and T1600, and offers 100 Gbps per-slot. The MX-Series Ethernet services router that includes MX960, MX480, and MX240, is the first in a series of Juniper platforms optimized for emerging Ethernet network architectures and services. Finally, the newest member of the family is the EX-Series Ethernet services router, which runs on JUNOS software. The family includes the EX3200, EX4200, and EX8200 designed to meet the technical, business and economic requirements of a service-enabling network infrastructure. Juniper's J-Series services routers are designed for high-end enterprise applications, offering solutions for security and branch-office connectivity. Juniper offers a large number of J-Series routers, including the J2300, J2320, J2350, J4350, and J6350 for secure network connectivity to branch and regional offices. Several of these models are Avaya voice ready and all models run JUNOS software, which offers advanced services such as MPLS, IPv6, QoS, multicast, and security such as, stateful firewall and IPSec VPN. Other products and services offered by Juniper include: Application Acceleration, which came to Juniper through the Perabit acquisition and optimizes application response time over Wide Area Networks (WAN). Circuits to Packet products provide the ability to transport circuit-based applications across a new generation of IP networks. The Junos operating system is the operating system that runs Juniper's routers. The Service Deployment System (SDX) is a customizable application that makes it possible for service providers to crate and deploy new IP services to subscribers. In the security business, Juniper offers unify access control, integrated firewall/IPSEC VPN, SSL VPN, and intrusion prevention. Finally, Juniper has a variety of service offerings, including Transition Services, Operation Services, and Optimization Services. Juniper breaks its product revenue into two segments: Infrastructure and Service Layer Technologies (SLT). The Infrastructure segment (75.3% of product revenue during 2007) includes traditional Juniper router portfolio (the E-, MX-, M-, T-, and EX-series product families) as well as the Kagoor and Acorn products. The SLT segment (24.7%) includes Security products and Application Acceleration products from the Funk, Peribit, Redline, and NetScreen acquisitions. Security products consist of firewall and virtual private network (VPN) systems as well as appliances, secure sockets layer VPN appliances, intrusion detection and prevention appliances, session border control products, and the J-series product family. Application Acceleration products consist of application front-end platforms and WAN optimization platforms. Juniper also derives revenue from Services, which comprised 18.0% of 2007 revenue. Juniper offers services to customers of its Infrastructure and SLT segments. Juniper's customer base includes service providers, government organizations, cable operators, mobile operators, research and education institutions, and network-intensive businesses. Geographically, approximately 47.3% of 2007 revenue was generated from the Americas 32.4% from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), and the remaining 20.3% from the Asia/Pacific region. Juniper was added to the Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 Index in June 2006.
