Headquartered in Broomfield, Colorado, Ball Corporation (BLL) is a manufacturer of metal and plastic packaging, primarily for beverages and foods. It also supplies aerospace and other technologies and services to government and commercial customers. The company employs approximately 15,500 people worldwide and organizes its businesses in five segments: The Metal Beverage Packaging, Americas & Asia, segment (40% of 2007 revenue) consists of operations located in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and People's Republic of China (PRC). In U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, the company manufactures metal container products used primarily in beverage packing. Ball's Chinese operations include the manufacture of aluminum cans and ends in three plants, as well as non-beverage plastic containers in two plants. The company also participates in two joint ventures that manufacture aluminum cans and ends in China. The Metal Beverage Packaging, Europe, segment (22%) comprises the company's operations in Europe. BLL has ten beverage can plants and two beverage can end plants in Europe. The Metal Food & Household Products Packaging, Americas, segment (16%) consists of operations located in the U.S. and Canada, which manufacture metal container products used primarily in food packaging. The Aerospace and Technologies segment (11%) includes national defense solutions, advanced technologies and products, and civil and operational space businesses. The Plastic Packaging, Americas, segment (10%) consists of eight manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and one in Canada, which manufacture polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene plastic container products used mainly in beverage and food packaging, as well as high-density polyethylene and polypropylene containers for industrial and household product applications. Sales of the packaging businesses are made directly to a concentrated number of major companies in the packaged food and beverage businesses, such as Miller Brewing Company and the bottlers of Pepsi-Cola and Coca-Cola.
