Based in Zurich, Switzerland, ACE Limited (ACE) is one of the world's largest global providers of property/casualty (P&C) insurance and reinsurance, operating in more than 140 countries and jurisdictions, with a primary focus on the catastrophe business. Founded in 1985 to write high layer excess liability insurance, ACE has since diversified through nine acquisitions into many specialty lines, including marine, medical risk, excess property, environmental, and terrorism insurance.

The company divides its operations into four business lines:

The Insurance-North American segment (55.5% of the $17.7 billion in gross written premiums in 2007) offers a broad range of P&C insurance and reinsurance products: general liability, excess liability, property, workers' compensation, automobile liability, professional lines, medical liability, aerospace, accident and health coverage and claims, and risk management products and services to commercial and non-commercial enterprises, as well as consumers.

The Insurance-Overseas General segment (35.5%) provides property, primary and excess casualty, energy, professional risk, marine, political risk, trade risk, accident and health, aviation, and consumer-driven products.

The Global Reinsurance segment (6.9%) offers a broad range of reinsurance products to several P&C and life insurance companies.

Life Insurance and Reinsurance (2.2%) formed in 2001, provides life insurance protection, investment where as Life Re was formed in 2000 as a Bermuda-based niche player to provide reinsurance coverage to other life insurance companies, focusing on guarantees included in certain fixed and variable annuity products and savings products to individuals in a number of countries including Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, China and Egypt.
